Two people were killed and six others injured in a shooting in the Moulins district of Nice, prompting outrage from the city's mayor Eric Ciotti, who described the attack as a declaration of war on the Republic.
The victims killed in the shooting were described by the prosecutor as completely unconnected to the drug trafficking that operates in the quartier des Moulins. Six men aged between 23 and 52 were wounded. Of those, five are now out of danger, while one remains in a very serious condition with significant injuries to his legs, according to the Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone, who held a joint press conference with Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli.
The presumed gunman and two accomplices have been charged and placed in pre-trial detention. A total of 19 spent cartridges of 7.62 calibre and 18 percussion caps were found at the scene. Prosecutors noted that the bullets had struck people rather than walls or shop fronts, indicating a deliberate intent to kill those present.
The Moulins neighbourhood was also hit by a shooting in October 2025 in which two people died, and by an arson attack in July 2024 linked to a score-settling that killed seven members of a Comorian family, including three children.
Ciotti called for 250 additional police officers to be deployed permanently in the department and announced plans for a permanent municipal police post in the Moulins neighbourhood from 2026.
