Tributes pour in after Nice man killed in Albania

Tributes have multiplied on social media for a 20-year-old Nice resident who died after an altercation while on holiday in Albania.

Tributes have continued to appear on social media for Luis Miguel Varela Mendes, a 20-year-old Nice resident known to friends as Milton, who died from stab wounds following an altercation in the early hours of Tuesday, August 18, in Ksamil, southern Albania, according to France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Nice mayor Éric Ciotti confirmed the death and offered condolences to the family, France 3 reported.

Varela Mendes had moved to Nice from Cape Verde as a child, and the Cape Verde embassy in Milan was among those to pay tribute, according to the outlet. A community association supporting the Cape Verdean population in France also expressed condolences and called for justice.

A suspect has reportedly been detained in connection with the case; in line with our house policy, we are withholding further details pending official confirmation.
