Alpes-Maritimes farmers report steep losses as drought bites again

Alpes-Maritimes farmers are reporting yield losses of up to 70 percent as a fresh summer drought grips the department.

Farmers across the Alpes-Maritimes are reporting yield losses of between 35 and 70 percent depending on the crop, after a summer of extreme heat following an initially favourable spring, according to figures from the FDSEA farming union reported by ICI Azur. Market gardening and beekeeping have been among the hardest-hit sectors, the union's departmental president told the outlet.

Around 100 communes in the department are now under water-use restrictions, ICI Azur reported, and roughly 80 percent of local farmers are connected to the mains water supply, meaning many face the same restrictions as other households in their area.
