Monaco's exotic garden is finally open again, and it was worth the wait

After years behind closed gates, Monaco's most dramatic garden has returned, bringing with it towering cacti, cliffside pathways and the sort of Mediterranean views that make even seasoned Riviera residents stop for a moment.

There are very few places where giant cacti, prehistoric caves and panoramic sea views sit quite so comfortably together. Monaco, naturally, has managed it.

The Jardin Exotique de Monaco officially reopened to the public on 30 March 2026 following an extensive restoration that saw one of the Principality's most treasured landmarks closed for almost six years. Monegasque residents were given an exclusive preview the day before, before visitors from around the world were welcomed back through its gates.

Originally opened in 1933, the garden clings dramatically to the cliffs above Monaco and is home to thousands of rare cacti, succulents and exotic plants collected from the Americas, Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Every turn offers another breathtaking view across Port Hercule, Monte-Carlo and the sparkling Mediterranean beyond.

Hidden beneath the gardens is one of Monaco's most fascinating secrets — the Observatory Cave. Discovered in 1916 and opened to visitors in 1950, the cave is filled with remarkable limestone formations created over hundreds of thousands of years. Guided tours depart every hour from 10am and last approximately 45 minutes, offering visitors a completely different perspective beneath the Principality.

The garden is open throughout the year, with seasonal opening hours. From May to September, visitors can explore from 9am until 7pm, while opening hours shorten slightly during the cooler months. Adult admission is €12, with reduced prices available for children, students and visitors over 65. Combined tickets are also available for those wishing to visit both the garden and the Observatory Cave.

Located at 62 Boulevard du Jardin Exotique, the attraction is easily accessible by car, with Parking des Salinessituated directly opposite, as well as by Monaco's public transport network.

Monaco is often celebrated for its luxury hotels, superyachts and glamorous events, but the Exotic Garden reminds visitors that the Principality's greatest treasures are not always found along Casino Square. Sometimes they are hidden high above the rooftops, where giant cacti stand against the Mediterranean sky and every pathway leads to another unforgettable view.

Whether you're visiting Monaco for the first time or have lived on the Riviera for years, the reopening of the Jardin Exotique is the perfect excuse to slow down for an afternoon and discover one of the Principality's most beautiful corners.
