Remains of an ancient vessel discovered last week off the Îles de Lérins, near Cannes, were presented to the public on Tuesday, June 30. Some of the finds are more than 2,000 years old and are believed to originate from Greece.
The Îles de Lérins sit just off the Cannes coast and are among the most historically significant islands in the Mediterranean, home to the fortified Abbaye de Lérins and the island of Sainte-Marguerite, where the Man in the Iron Mask was allegedly imprisoned. The discovery of ancient Greek cargo in their waters adds a new chapter to an already remarkable history.
Further details on the extent of the find and any plans for recovery or exhibition are expected to be announced in due course by the relevant maritime archaeology authorities.
