A motorcyclist was killed in the early hours of Monday July 6 after driving against traffic on the A8 motorway near Saint-Laurent-du-Var and colliding head-on with a vehicle.
The rider, who was travelling in the wrong direction on the motorway, struck a car at around 4am. Emergency services attended the scene but the motorcyclist could not be saved. The circumstances that led the rider to be driving against the flow of traffic on the A8 are under investigation.
The A8 motorway is one of the main arterial routes along the Côte d'Azur coast, connecting Nice with the Italian border to the east and with Aix-en-Provence and Marseille to the west. Wrong-way driving incidents on French motorways, though relatively rare, are typically fatal given the speeds involved.
