Free public transport for residents over 65 took effect across the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolitan area on September 1, according to Nice Premium. The measure, a campaign pledge from mayor Éric Ciotti, was presented at the Nice municipal seniors' office alongside Lignes d'Azur regie president Bertrand Gasiglia as a policy aimed at supporting purchasing power and intergenerational solidarity, the outlet reported.
Since registration opened on July 10, 24,000 residents have signed up for the scheme, Nice Premium reported. Eligible residents must apply through Lignes d'Azur, either in person or online, before their free travel pass is validated.
The change comes alongside a wider set of back-to-school adjustments to the Lignes d'Azur network, including reinforced services on several routes to accommodate school traffic and a number of new stops added across the metropolitan area, according to ICI.
