Vallauris is marking 80 years since Pablo Picasso first arrived in the town, running a three day celebration through Sunday in honour of the artist who became its most famous honorary citizen.
Picasso's connection to Vallauris began with his collaboration with the town's Madoura ceramics workshop, a partnership credited with reviving Vallauris' ceramic tradition and drawing generations of artists and craftspeople to the town in the decades since. The town has marked the anniversary of his arrival every year since.
Friday's programme opened with a free pyro-musical show over the Plage du Soleil in Golfe-Juan. The weekend continues with pottery workshops for children, flamenco parades and performances reflecting Picasso's Spanish roots, and a flamenco tablao show tracing the tradition's full emotional range. Visitors can also take a torch-lit tour of Picasso's monumental work La Guerre et la Paix at the Musée Magnelli, viewing the piece by torchlight in small groups, before the weekend closes with a video mapping display projected across the church façade near the town's Homme au Mouton statue.
