Vallauris burglary call turns violent as police officer shoots suspect, mayor criticises custody procedure

Two municipal police officers were injured by tear gas during Sunday's intervention, with one opening fire and wounding a suspect in the hip. The officer was placed in custody under standard procedure, a move the town's mayor has publicly criticised.

A burglary call turned violent in Vallauris on Sunday afternoon, leaving two municipal police officers injured and a suspect shot and hospitalised after an officer opened fire during the intervention, according to ICI Azur.

Mayor Kevin Luciano said officers responding to a burglary near the château d'eau encountered two individuals he described as armed and violent. Both officers were injured by tear gas during the confrontation, and one subsequently fired his service weapon, wounding one suspect in the hip. That suspect, said to be a resident of Nice's Moulins district, was arrested and hospitalised, while the second fled on a red motorcycle and remained at large as of Sunday evening.

Following standard procedure whenever an officer discharges a firearm on duty, the officer who fired was placed in police custody pending an inquiry into the exact circumstances. Luciano publicly criticised that step, writing that officers "cannot be asked to protect us while also being prevented from defending themselves," and voicing his support for the officer involved. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
