Orange heatwave alert extended across Alpes-Maritimes through Wednesday

The region stays on orange alert into July as authorities warn of dangerous temperatures and severe storm risk arriving from Monday evening.

Météo-France has extended its orange heatwave alert for the Alpes-Maritimes until at least Wednesday, July 1, with authorities warning that the exceptional heat shows no sign of easing before then.

The Alpes-Maritimes has been under continuous orange alert since the start of last week, according to Franceinfo. Residents are being urged to drink water regularly, avoid going out during the hottest part of the day, keep shutters closed during daylight hours and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.

The heatwave has already had severe consequences across the Riviera: Ironman Nice was cancelled on Friday and the events that followed led to the death of a cyclist on Sunday. The city of Nice has deployed storm alert warnings for thunderstorms on Monday evening and into Tuesday.

The Alpes-Maritimes regional health agency said the heat episode was expected to intensify and persist and called the situation serious for vulnerable populations.
