More than 5,000 households remain on the waiting list for social housing in Cannes, according to Françoise Bruneteaux, president of Cannes-Lérins Aménagements Habitat, the town's social housing provider, according to ICI Azur.
While much of the region's attention has focused on Nice's social housing stock, Cannes faces its own ageing crisis, particularly in residences built during the 1960s, when low-cost construction standards left many buildings poorly insulated. Bruneteaux singled out the Ranchito residence as a particular concern amid the summer's extended heatwave. "These were low-cost constructions at the time, and inevitably, they were more or less insulated," she said. "At Ranchito, for example, there's no mechanical ventilation. With the temperatures we're having right now, there's no air circulation at all."
Renovation work is currently underway at both the Riou and Ranchito residences as part of the provider's response to the ageing stock, though the scale of demand, with thousands still waiting, continues to outpace the pace of new supply and refurbishment.
