Some sports were born for stadiums. High jump, it turns out, was born for Monaco.
This evening, the Quai Albert Ier hosts the inaugural Monaco Athletics Festival, a free, open-air high jump competition bringing the world's leading jumpers to compete against the backdrop of the Mediterranean.
The event grew from a partnership between the Fédération Monégasque d'Athlétisme and Qatari Olympic champion Mutaz Barshim, whose What Gravity Tour has spent recent seasons taking high jump out of stadiums and into the heart of cities. Monaco's own history with urban athletics runs deeper still, having hosted discus and shot put events on Port Hercule during Meeting Herculis in 2018 and 2019. This new festival builds directly on that foundation, transforming the waterfront into what organisers describe as a spectacular open-air arena.
Rodolphe Berlin, representing the federation, said the ambition extends well beyond a single evening. "We hope to establish this event permanently on Monaco's calendar, and to make the Monaco Athletics Festival a true popular celebration of our sport," he said.
For a Principality already synonymous with speed on land and sea, tonight adds something new to its sporting story: the thrill of watching athletes rise, quite literally, above it all.
