Cannes city hall has equipped its municipal police with three detectors for protoxyde d'azote, commonly known as laughing gas, for use during road checks, according to France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Ouest-France. The move, announced on Saturday, August 22, is described as a first of its kind in France.
The rollout comes as national legislation targeting the substance is expected to be tightened in the coming months, France 3 reported, amid wider concern over its recreational use and links to dangerous driving.
