Cagnes-sur-Mer fire destroyed possessions of 28 domestic violence victims and their children

The warehouse fire BCN reported last week turns out to have burned the stored belongings of women who fled violent homes, from clothing and furniture to children's toys and family keepsakes. Neighbouring Saint-Laurent-du-Var has pledged 1,000 euros in emergency aid, and a fundraiser is now live.

The warehouse fire that broke out in Cagnes-sur-Mer on August 4 destroyed the stored possessions of 28 women and their children who had fled domestic violence, association Une Voix Pour Elles confirmed, in a discovery that has drawn an outpouring of local support since.

The warehouse held personal effects belonging to women forced to leave their homes in an emergency: clothing, furniture, appliances, children's toys and family keepsakes, kept safe by the association while the families waited for permanent housing. Saint-Laurent-du-Var, which has supported the association since 2021 by providing free storage space and joining its collection drives, will put a 1,000 euro emergency grant to a vote at its next municipal council meeting. "An additional ordeal after the violence they've already suffered," the town said in a statement.

Une Voix Pour Elles, which has operated in the Alpes-Maritimes for six years, carried out 328 emergency house moves for domestic violence victims across the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in 2025 alone, alongside distributing more than 2,600 essential supply kits. A fundraiser for the 28 affected families is now live on HelloAsso, with the association also accepting material donations directly.
