Antibes Juan-les-Pins banned swimming on three beaches this week after a small vessel ran aground near the former Marineland site, as a precaution against possible fuel pollution from the stranded boat.
The roughly ten metre boat washed ashore on the Marineland beach, between Antibes and Villeneuve-Loubet, on the evening of Monday, August 17. The town hall closed swimming across the Marineland, Groules and eastern commune boundary beaches as a precaution, though officials said no pollution had actually been detected at the time of the announcement. The restriction, initially set to run until Wednesday morning, remained in place "until further notice" according to the town's own updates, with the boat expected to be removed from the shoreline.
