Alpes-Maritimes students face roughly €4,000 back-to-school bill

A local student federation puts this year's total start-of-term cost for Alpes-Maritimes students at around €4,000, well above the national average, as students describe taking on extra work to cope.

Students in the Alpes-Maritimes face a total back-to-school cost of roughly €4,000 this year, according to the annual report published Wednesday, September 2 by FACE 06, the department's federation of student associations, as reported by actu.fr. The report breaks down the budget students face at the start of the university year, though the outlet's full breakdown of individual spending categories was not available at the time of writing.

The local figure sits above the national average reported separately this week by the Fage, France's largest student union, which put the average cost of a university year at €3,240, a rise of just over 25 percent since 2020, according to France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

Students quoted by France 3 described taking on extra work to cope with rising costs, with one saying they would need to add a second job alongside their apprenticeship to get by this year.
